Is that a Shiba Inu?? Is it a Husky mix??
No, it’s a Norwegian Buhund…. It’s a what??

That is the questions I get every time I take my dogs for a walk. Norwegian Buhunds are an ancient Nordic breed, who were favoured by the Vikings. In fact, skeletal remains of Buhunds have been found in Viking grave sites. Today, the Norwegian Buhund is in danger of becoming extinct in Norway, but Norwegians have recently realized what a national treasure they have in the Buhund and are now working towards preserving the breed.

Buhunds are a fabulous all-round breed, they are very affectionate, friendly and social. Buhunds are a medium sized compact dog perfectly built to herd sheep, do obedience work, agility or any other dog sport. Buhunds have been specifically bred for the last 1200 years, to be the most social and trainable of the Nordic ‘Spitz’ breeds. They love to work with you or just hang around with you. They make great family pets, as they are particularly fond of children. They also integrate very well into a pack and accept other animals easily. As with any breed socialization at an early age is very important.
My two Buhunds came from the premier Norwegian Buhund Breeder in Canada, Kyon Kennels in Ontario. The Norwegian Buhund is a very healthy breed, with very few congenital health issues. Kyon Kennels are very diligent about health testing their breeding dogs and produce superior Norwegian Buhund puppies.
Beyla and Dora will be entered at the Pt. Alberni show October 14 – 16/11, come cheer us on!
I am always happy to talk about Buhunds, so feel free to contact me if you have questions.
